Resident Assistant (RA) Position at Showa Boston Institute
Immediate Supervisor:  Resident Services Coordinator
Position Summary:
Live-in position mentoring and supporting predominately female, Japanese study-abroad students at an academic-residential campus.
Provide diverse, individual, and group learning opportunities for students to communicate in English and become more familiar with American culture.
Position is non-paid, residential, part-time position.  Full room and board and use of facilities are provided in exchange for services.
RA’s work an average of 10-12 hours a week, predominately evenings and weekends, in exchange for private room with a private bath, full meal plan, use of campus facilities (including pool, Jacuzzi, and computer lab), free parking, wireless internet, discounted Japanese lessons on campus, and free shuttle bus (Showa to/from Reservoir T stop)
General responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Be available and accessible to students and regularly interact with both wing residents and the Showa Boston community.
Create a welcoming, safe residential environment.
Care for students when they need help, including assisting with medical issues as directed by Student Services staff.
Perform overnight duty as the RA on-call as assigned, approximately 3 times per month.
Plan, facilitate, and chaperone events for students both on and off campus.
Facilitate one program/activity per month minimum.
Participate in Showa Boston community events, held both on and off campus.
Prepare for, help coordinate, and participate in group arrivals and departures.
Lead and actively participate in all orientation activities for each incoming group, including but not limited to: Group Arrival, Campus Tour, Welcome Party, City Tour, and Coolidge Corner Tour (all activities typically happen within the first 5 days of arrival).
Change and update wing bulletin board at least once per semester.
Hold regular, posted office hours for students.
Share information with Student Services staff regarding students’ welfare on a regular basis.
Submit detailed monthly reports to the Resident Services Coordinator.
Participate in all Resident Assistant staff meetings, including Monday evenings from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm.
Participate in Resident Assistant in-service learning workshops.
Meet weekly with wing co-RA to collaborate on wing activities and budget. 
Meet weekly with wing leaders.
Meet with co-RA and Resident Services Coordinator as needed.
Other duties may be assigned based on the needs of the Student Services Department at Showa Boston.
Native English speaker
BA/BS degree preferred
Previous Residence Life and/or Student Life experience preferred
Interest in and/or experience with international or intercultural education preferred
Interest in and/or experience with Japanese culture a plus

May 2012 Elections: Call for Platforms! And General Meeting

NEJETAA is having officer elections for Vice President, Treasurer, and Social Chair on Wed. May 16th at our General Meeting at 6pm at the Consulate General of Japan Offices in the Federal Reserve Building.
To RSVP for the meeting, please email Kasey our Social Chair at social at nejetaa dot com by SUNDAY MAY 6TH. We’ll be providing a free dinner for attendees but you must RSVP and bring a photo ID to show to security in order to enter the building.
If you cannot attend the meeting, please register here on our website if you haven’t already to be able to vote online next week.

When: Wed. May. 16, 6pm.
Why: Vote and discuss upcoming events (Membership update, Photo Exhibit, JET Orientation, Career Workshop, and a possible sub-chapter or summer event!)
Members will be voting for Vice President, Treasurer, and Social Chair. Officers are entitled to a free ($45 value!) membership to the Japan Society in Boston, as well as other perks.
Positions are normally for a one year term, no term limits. Officers are expected to attend as many of the 6 general meetings (held every two months) and 2-4 executive meetings (held as necessary) per year as possible, with 50% attendance as a minimum.
We are asking for platforms of all interested candidates to be submitted for review by our membership. If you’re interested in joining the NEJETAA board, please submit a platform!

Japanese interpreter for 1.5 months on a ship

We received the following job posting from a contact in Houston. It’s not the job for everyone, but it could also be an incredible experience for the right person. I’m not aware of the organization so please make any queries directly to them:

We are looking for a male English-Japanese interpreter to work on a ship for about 1.5 month of the coast of Japan transporting a drilling rig from Korea to Russia. The interpretation will be for Japanese-speaking deep water divers, who do not speak English well.
We are looking for a younger guy, possible here in the US who can work during summer time, possibly student. The pay is in the range of low to mid 3-digit number in $US per day for 7-day week. Transportation, meal, accommodations, etc. is paid by the Company.

The Coordinator for Public Relations works closely with consulate officers and other local staff to promote greater interest in and understanding of Japan and Japanese culture in Northern California and Nevada. S/he also works with the JIC Director to handle Japan-related press and public affairs issues that arise within areas served by this office. In addition, as a staff member of the Consulate, applicants must be willing to work as a part of a team, respecting other team members and sharing responsibilities in the team and office in general.

Duties include:

The May 4th Culture Fair features language activities and martial arts. A LEX member with a black belt will teach a karate mini-session for children — and for all those young at heart! Join NEJETAA at the Boston Haru Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival

As Kasey, our Social Chair, mentioned earlier this week, the Boston Haru Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival is happening this Sunday the 29th from 11am-4pm in Copley Square. A few days ago the weather showed rain but now it’s expected to be sunny, high in the mid 50’s! 
Everyone is welcome to attend the free festival and there will be over 80 booths with food, arts/crafts, games, and musical performances. Bring some cash if you’d like to purchase food or other items at the festival! This is a great event for people of all ages and friends of JET and those involved in the Japan-US community! We’re expecting a huge turnout for this event!
A group of NEJETAA members are planning to go together, so if you would like to join us, we’ll meet at 11am around the area between the stage and the information table. Please RSVP on our Facebook event page and let us know if you plan to be there so we can look out for you! 
Also please note that if you are coming to the festival by public transit (recommended as parking can be hard to find) and taking the Red Line, there will be shuttle bus service between Kendall and Broadway stations due to maintenance scheduled at Park Street station. Please factor in some extra time when planning your commute.

The Illuminator is a white cargo van equipped with video and audio projection, as well as a fully stocked infoshop and mini-library. It is a tactical media tool available to the Occupy Movement, both useful and beautiful. It is a shapeshifter,  a transformer of public space which disrupts the patterns of everyday life, and embodies the social and political transformations for which the Occupy Movement continues to fight. 
Mark Read is an artist, activist, and educator based in Brooklyn, New York. He is perhaps best known as the creator of the “99% Bat Signal” that was projected onto the Verizon Building in New York City on November 17th, 2012. His films have been shown internationally in a variety of venues, from the Piazza de Ferrari in Genoa Italy, to the Halls of the Whitney Museum.  He is an adjunct professor of Media Studies at New York University.
