NEJETAA Annual Ski Trip–A Shared Experience

At the end of January, New England JET Alumni Association hosted the 4th Annual Northeast Region Ski Trip at Killington Ski Resort. This was our biggest ski trip yet–30 JET alumni and friends of JET from all over New England, New York, DC, and even Ottawa reunited or met for the first time in Vermont.

This kind of a trip is the perfect opportunity for JET alumni old and new to come together. We had JETs who have been back for 10 years now and ones who just returned last summer. There is something really special about getting so many people who have a shared experience together in one place. Even though we were all sent to different prefectures in Japan, we all end up back home as JET Alumni.

This is what Pam Kavalam, the JETAANY President had to say about the trip:

“Had such an awesome time with you all. I heard a rumour that this was the best JETAA international cross chapter trip (4 chapters represented!) EVER! Big thank you to Dan, Rachel, Matt and the whole team who put this together. (And Mike for driving the whole JETAANY crew singlehandedly!). Here’s to another great 30 years!”

When we asked our fearless leader Dan Lowe what we enjoys most about the ski trip, he had this to say:

“The success of the NEJETAA Ski Trip is tied to the number of people and chapters represented. A unique sense of community forms when a diverse group sharing a common JET experience comes together to have fun, network, and share common passions. The JET Program in turn benefits from an active alumni community, energized by chapter initiatives such as this.”

Thanks for always having us back, Summit Lodge!

And last but not least, we had to ask Alex Svetlovsky, JETAA Ottawa Senior Advisor, why he has crossed the Canadian border four years in a row for this trip.

“I’ve gone to the NEJETAA Ski Trip four years in a row, now. The first year, NEJETAA reached out to nearby chapters while I was the president of JETAA Ottawa. The trip was very appealing – a whole group of JET alumni in one place for a ski trip. Three of us all gathered in my car and drove the six hours down to arrive very early on Friday.

That first trip there was magical for me.

I met so many new friends – ones that I still stay in contact with four years later, even though they’ve only gone once. The trip is that perfect mix of new people to meet, a shared experience between us all, and an ideal venue. The skiing is secondary to me; all the warm memories I have from my four trips are of the different smiles and adventures with the people I’ve met. That, and the hot tub. I would recommend the trip to anyone – skiers and non-skiers alike. Come for a weekend ski getaway, keep coming back for the warmth and friendships developed.”

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate 30 years with us! We hope to see you next year!

Ski Trip to Killington

We are fantastically excited to announce that NEJETAA is hosting a Ski Trip to Killington, VT. And you’re invited!

Last time around, we gathered together for a day on the slopes of Waterville Valley. Some of us spent the day learning new tricks from the masters, some used the time to hone their already impressive skills, and others just enjoyed playing in the snow. Truly it was awesome. But when the day was done some of us thought “wouldn’t it be great if we could keep on doing this tomorrow, too?”

So guess what? That’s what we’re doing! And not just us, but the JET Alumni Associations of New York, Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto are all putting out the word to their memberships, too. The whole North Eastern family is coming together. And since we luckily live so close, those of us who’d rather keep it to a day trip can just join us on Saturday and do just that.

Here’s the details:

Where? Mt. Killington, Vermont (
When? January 31st to February 2nd. (Or just February 1st if you prefer a day trip.)
How Much? It’s not final, but these are the projections: Lift tickets are $61 for 1 day, or $117 for two days. Ski/Snowboard rentals are $35 for 1 day, or $60 for 2 days (helmets are an extra $5 or $10 for 1 or 2 days).
Lodging? Summit Lodge ( $119.50 – $179.00 for for 2 nights (depending on how many people are in the room – options are 4, 3 or 2 people in one room).
What’ll We Do? Ski, snowboard, snowshoe, cross-country ski, snow tubing ($10 per person for 1.5 hours), rock climbing ($15 for a day pass, $10 first timer lesson). We can even arrange snowmobiling if there’s enough interest!
How Do I Sign Up? Fill in your information at this link BY DECEMBER 7TH:
We hope to see you there!

Join NEJETAA on Sunday May 19 for the 2013 Japan Festival! Last spring — as a celebration for the 100 year anniversary of the gift of cherry trees from Kyoto to Washington DC — Boston hosted a Spring Festival. With over 13,000 attendees in 2012, the event has been moved to from Copley Square to the heart of Boston — Boston City Hall Plaza in Government Center.
NEJETAA will be represented with a booth, representing the JET Programme and handing out fortunes from our Omikuji Tree.
Any interested in volunteering at the NEJETAA booth should email membership at nejetaa dot com (volunteers are not required to volunteer for the entire day, just an hour would be great!). As Kasey, our Social Chair, mentioned earlier this week, the Boston Haru Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival is happening this Sunday the 29th from 11am-4pm in Copley Square. A few days ago the weather showed rain but now it’s expected to be sunny, high in the mid 50’s!

A group of NEJETAA members are planning to go together, so if you would like to join us, we’ll meet at 11am around the area between the stage and the information table. Please RSVP on our Facebook event page and let us know if you plan to be there so we can look out for you!
Also please note that if you are coming to the festival by public transit (recommended as parking can be hard to find) and taking the Red Line, there will be shuttle bus service between Kendall and Broadway stations due to maintenance scheduled at Park Street station. Please factor in some extra time when planning your commute.
We look forward to seeing you at the festival!
